At the Movies – Deep Water Horizon

This weeks movie was Deep Water Horizon – On April 20, 2010, the Deep Water Horizon drilling rig explodes in the Gulf of Mexico, igniting a massive fireball that kills several crew members. Chief electronics technician Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg) and his colleagues find themselves fighting for survival as the heat and the flames become stifling and overwhelming. Banding together, the co-workers must use their wits to make it out alive amid all the chaos.

Discussion Topics:

1. In the movie Deep Water Horizon we see there were many people on board the oil rig and most of those people had different reasons for getting up in the morning.  The BP representatives were all about the bottom line dollar while Mike Williams (Mark Wahlberg’s character) was all about his family, and Mr. Jimmy (Kurt Russell) was about the integrity of the well.  Ask these questions: Why do you get up in the morning? What drives you to be you? Does Colossians 3:23 play any part in your answer?  Should it?
2. Throughout the movie Deep Water Horizon we talked about the concept of integrity.  The dictionary definition of integrity is: the state of being whole and undivided.  Take some time to discuss this definition of integrity?  How does this look in your life? How does your spirituality play a part in this holistic picture?
3. Read Matthew 7:13 using the Message translation.  In the movie we saw there were multiple warning signs that the well did not have sound integrity and disaster was on the horizon.  Where in your life are you ignoring the warning signs that you lack integrity?  If you continue to ignore those signs what will the “blow-out” be?
