This week during our Built to Connect series, Pastor David looks into how Jesus welcomes. Join us as we open John 8 and discuss the biblical story about the woman caught in adultery.Scripture: John 8:2-11

Discussion Topics:

  1. Begin by reading and/or discussing John 8:2-11 so that everyone is
familiar with the story. Is there an aspect of the story that stands out
to you? Is there part of the text that you are confused by? What is the
initial revelation or insight that you received in this passage?
  2. In your current stage of life who do you relate most to in this
historical moment? Jesus who was in a lose-lose scenario? The people
lost in the moment, with the angry mob, filled with “them” and “they”
type people? The Pharisees that had their hands full of rock just
waiting to throw them? Possibly the women, who
was caught in adultery, and your in a place in your life where you can
not save face and save your butt at the same time?
  3. One of the most powerful lines in this passage is when Jesus asks the
women, “Where are your accusers?”. The reason this is such a powerful
question, despite that fact that Jesus already knew the answer, is
because after we have been through a traumatic event we often can’t get
past the pain. Is there a place in your life that you can not get past?
Is there an event that you might be past but you constantly feel like
the rocks will start flying at any moment? Where is it in your life do
you need to recognize that Jesus has set you free and the pain of the
past has no power over the potential of the future?
  4. Discuss John 8:9 (King James Version) “And they which heard it, being
convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the
eldest, even unto the last:…” What does “convicted by their own
conscience” mean? Haven’t we always been taught that the Holy Spirit
brings conviction? Are these two thoughts opposing to each other? What is
the difference between convicted by your conscience and feeling guilty
    or shameful?
