Peter

The life of Jesus’ disciple Peter is one that most people can relate. Peter had to deal with his denial of Jesus after Jesus was alive from the dead. How can we know that Jesus is alive? Know that he died for our sins, believe he is our Savior, yet continue dealing with the real life issues we face? This week we look at how to overcome the voices of the past that continually try to keep us from our future.

Matthew 5, Matthew 16, Mark 16, Luke 22, John 21

Discussion topics

  1. This first question is meant to be fun and wide open in regards to your discussion time. Of all the disciples, which one is your favorite one to hear and/or talk about? Is there one story in the Bible about a disciple that really stands out to you? Where does Peter fall on your list in regards to your favorite to hear/talk about?
  2. When you read about Peter denying Jesus, how does that make you feel? Can you put yourself in his place and see why he did what he did? If you were Peter in this place, how do you think you would have responded?
  3. We speculated that when Peter said that he was “going fishing” (John 21) he was warring with what to do with his future due to the past decisions that were haunting his present reality. What are the voices, the stories, past memories that keep trying to get you “fishing” rather than pursuing God? Another way to ask this is – What lies of your past failures are keeping you from your future successes?
  4. The last thing we see in John 21:5-9 is Peter jumping out of the boat to swim to shore to get to Jesus. We also discover that the boat was only 100 yards off the shore. One thing that Pastor David mentioned was “Jesus is always closer than you think even when you are at your worst”. This question is easy and hard all at the same time… do you feel close to God today?
