Faith of the Centurion
Imagine not being a Christian. Only hearing rumors and stories about Jesus. You do not believe Jesus was the Messiah. Imagine the first time you meet Jesus he informs everyone within listening distance that he has never met someone with greater faith than you. Hard to believe? That is exactly what happens in this week’s narrative recorded by Luke and Matthew. Join us as we learn about the faith of the Centurion leader.
Luke 8:3-5
Discussion topics
Read Luke 8:3-5
- The centurion heard of Jesus and sent some elders of the Jews to him, asking him to come and heal his servant. 4. When they came to Jesus, they pleaded earnestly with him, “This man deserves to have you do this, 5. because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue.”
- What are your first thoughts about this scripture? Do you think this is a mentality that Christians, or non-Christians, still have today about God? Where in your life do you think that you deserve something from God?
- Scriptures said “the servant of the centurion”- but servant could be translated “little child, little boy”. Regardless if it was his child or servant the event drove the centurion to seek Jesus for help. Has there ever been a situation in your life that others thought was a tragedy but you found Jesus in a powerful way?
- When the centurion said, “But say the word, and my servant will be healed”, the scriptures say that Jesus was speechless. In your own words why was Jesus speechless? What does this moment teach us about faith?
