Tough Love
This week’s message with Pastor Aaron Semanek and his wife Katie explores the “Pastor’s Perspective” on tough love. In your life’s journey, you have probably experienced tough love. But why does God use it in the spiritual journey of today’s Christian? What does it look like in your life? And how do you grow from it?
Habakkuk 1:2-4, James 1:2-3, Isaiah 30:1
Discussion topics
- During the message we looked at the story of Habakkuk as he took his complaints to God. Over time his complaints to God turned into confidence in God. Can you remember a time when you took your complaints to God? Maybe you’re in that stage right now. Are you stuck in your complaints or walking more in confidence? Describe how that experience was or is for you and don’t be afraid to share the raw emotions of these experiences.
- On Sunday Pastor Aaron and Katie defined spiritual tough love as a spiritual character development tool God uses to grow followers of Christ beyond the immaturity of humanity into the maturity of Christ. Have you experienced this tool? Did it come through God or through someone who spiritually encourages you in your walk? How did it help you?
- Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” As followers of Jesus not only do we receive tough love, but we can encourage others with it. What advice or lessons learned can you give when it comes to offering tough love to someone else?
- Take this last question and ponder it this week. Is there a place in your life right now where you are experiencing spiritual tough love? What next step do you need to take to embrace this maturing work God wants to do in your life.
