God Won’t Give You More Than You Can Handle
When was the last time you heard someone say, “God won’t give you more than you can handle”? Generally, this is supposed to be a comforting statement to a person in a challenging situation. But, does it really help? Is it biblical? Where does a statement like this come from? This week we consider if God gives us more than we can handle and what is the purpose behind such a scenario.
1 Corinthians 10:13
Discussion topics
1. Fun, icebreaker opening… Without gossip or name dropping, can you name the worst spiritual advice you have ever received?
2. Pastor shared that the phrase “God won’t give you more than you can handle” most likely came from 1 Corinthians 10:13. Take time to read this passage and discuss the truths that you see. (feel free to read multiple versions out loud)
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”
3. Pastor mentioned that there were three specific reasons he believes God allows the weight of life to come:
- A time of testing
- To learn how to depend on His presence
- For us to know God’s power
Do one of these speak to you? Is there another reason that comes to mind on why God would allow you to have more than you can handle?
4. How have you experienced the presence of God when you had more than you could handle?
5. What’s overwhelming you? Ask your NavGroup to help you determine whether to put it down, hand it off, or give it to God.
