Ishmael & Isaac
Ishmael was born to the family through the handmaiden Hagar but some fourteen years later God allowed Sarai to conceive and give birth to Isaac. What are we to learn from this historical narrative? Where do we repeat Abrahams foolishness and what can we do today to live with the faith that Abraham learned?
Genesis 16
Discussion topics
1. Abraham had to wait 14 long years to see God’s promise come to fulfillment through the birth of Isaac. Is there a place in your life where you are waiting on the promise of God to come through? How have you been doing in the waiting period?
2. God told Abraham he would have a child. Abraham and Sarah thought they would help God’s plan by having Abraham lay with Hagar which produced Ishmael. Rather than this being a solution it caused more problems. Is there a place in your life that you tried to fix yourself, rather than waiting on God? How did it cause more problems than solutions?
3. When you look back over the story of Abraham, what lessons did you learn? What questions do you have? What do you hear Jesus saying to you as you re-read this life story from Genesis 11 to Genesis 25?
