Many people know the scripture Hebrews 12:1 that says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” How many people actually know how to throw those weights off? This week we look at sin from the perspective of a penalty, presence, and practice and show one technique to help throw our sin off.
Scripture: Hebrews 12:1-2
Discussion Topics:
- This week in your NavGroup, we encourage you to do a good, old fashion Bible Study!!! Read Hebrews 12:1-12 and discuss the meaning behind these scripture. How do these thoughts build on one another? Why do you think the writer of Hebrews chose to write about discipleship and disciple in the thought of “throwing off the weights”? What about this passage of scripture do you get, have questions about, and/or have understanding?
- When it comes to sin we can see that there is the penalty of sin, the presence of sin and the practice of sin. The penalty of sin was paid in full by our Savior Jesus Christ. But, why didn’t Jesus just rid the world of sin and get it out of our presence? If that question is too deep then ask yourself this one… what does it mean to practice sin?
- In life if you say no to one thing that means you are most likely saying yes to another. NO to being a workaholic means you are saying YES to being a present family member. YES to junk food probably means saying NO to the dream body you always wanted. Where in your life are you saying YES when you should be saying NO and NO where you should be saying YES?
