Rebels Without a Cause – Freedom Through Surrender
What if the freedom you’re fighting for is actually keeping you in bondage? What if the boundaries you’ve been resisting are the very things God designed to protect you?
We all want the benefits of order, protection, and security, but we don’t always want to surrender our right to determine what’s right. From the Garden of Eden to the Book of Judges, Scripture reveals what happens when humanity rejects God’s authority and everyone begins doing what is right in their own eyes.
In this message from Counterfeit Kingdom, Pastor David explores why we resist authority, how rebellion promises freedom but produces bondage, and why surrendering to Jesus is the pathway to genuine freedom. Along the way, we’re challenged to examine where we’ve treated God’s Word as a suggestion, resisted correction, or confused doing whatever we want with actually being free.
The counterfeit kingdom promises freedom without surrender. Jesus offers freedom through surrender. The question isn’t simply whether we believe in Jesus. It’s whether we’re willing to let Him be Lord over every area of our lives.

Discussion topics
- HEAD – What did Jesus say to you through the Word?
- Read Genesis 2:15, Genesis 3:17 and Genesis 11:4
- Read Genesis 2:16–17 and Genesis 3:1–7. God gave Adam and Eve tremendous freedom, but He also established a boundary. Why do you think humanity is so often tempted to view God’s boundaries as restrictions rather than protection?
- Read Judges 17:6 and Judges 21:25. What happens when everyone begins doing what is right in their own eyes? How does this help explain the difference between personal freedom and living under God’s authority?
- Read John 8:31–36. Jesus teaches that people can believe they’re free while actually being enslaved to sin. How does Jesus’ definition of freedom differ from the way our culture often defines it?
- HEART – How did it make you feel?
- Where have I decided that my understanding of what’s right matters more than what God has said? Is there an area where I’ve been treating Scripture more like a suggestion than an authority?
- We all appreciate accountability until someone actually holds us accountable. How do you typically respond when someone challenges or corrects you? What might that response reveal about your willingness to surrender control?
- Is there something in your life you’ve been calling freedom that may actually be controlling you? Consider the statement: “If I cannot say no to something, I need to ask whether I’m really free from it.”
- HANDS – What are you going to do with it?
- Identify one area where you’ve been resisting God’s authority. What is one specific act of obedience you can take this week to surrender that area to Him?
- Invite someone you trust to speak into your life. Ask them, “Is there an area where you’ve noticed me becoming defensive or resistant to correction?” Commit to listening before explaining or defending yourself.
- Practice freedom through surrender. Identify one habit, desire, or behavior that has been exercising too much control over your life. What practical boundary can you establish this week to begin living under God’s authority instead?
