The Hustle Trap – Performance vs. Purpose
What if the problem isn’t that you haven’t achieved enough? What if you’ve been asking achievement to give you something it was never designed to give?
God created us to work, build, create, and accomplish. But when our work stops being worship and starts becoming the source of our identity, we fall into The Hustle Trap. We begin measuring our worth by what we produce, and no matter how much we accomplish, the tower is never tall enough.
In this message from Counterfeit Kingdom, Pastor David explores how sin turned work into toil, how Babel turned achievement into identity, and how Jesus restores work to its intended purpose. We can work hard without allowing our work to become our king, rest without believing everything depends on us, and live in a way that points people toward Jesus.
We work hard because our work is worship. We rest well because our work isn’t our god.

- Read Genesis 2:15, Genesis 3:17 and Genesis 11:4
- What changes about work after sin enters the story? Why does it matter that work existed before the Fall?
- The people at Babel were productive, organized, innovative, and ambitious. What made their work become counterfeit? Where is the line between building something great and needing what you build to make you great?
- Read Colossians 3:23–24. What would change about the way you approach your job, school, ministry, parenting, or responsibilities if you genuinely believed, “It is the Lord Christ I are serving”?
- HEART – How did it make you feel?
- Finish this sentence honestly: “I feel most valuable when I __________.” What does your answer reveal about where you tend to find your worth?
- Which is harder for you: working hard without needing recognition, or stopping work without feeling guilty? Why?
- The sermon said, “The problem isn’t building something great. The problem is needing what I build to tell me that I’m great.” Is there anything you are currently asking to tell you that you’re successful, significant, or enough?
- HANDS – What are you going to do with it?
- Practice Sabbath. Choose a specific period this week to intentionally stop producing and enjoy God’s provision and presence. What will you stop doing, and what could you intentionally do that restores your awareness of God?
- Turn your work into witness. The sermon asked, “When was the last time your work created an opportunity for someone to see Jesus?” Identify one person in your workplace, school, neighborhood, or normal weekly rhythm who could see Jesus through the way you work, serve, speak, respond, or treat them this week.
- Make one Kingdom adjustment. What is one thing you need to stop, start, or reorder this week so that your work flows from your identity rather than becoming your identity?
