One Life

Have you ever heard the cliché’s “You have one life”, “Live your best life now”, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself”. Of course you have. Why? Because there is one thing that we all know intrinsically – We have one shot at this life. This week we look at the most important thing we have to watch out for in this life by studying 1 Kings 20.

I Kings 20:35-43

Discussion topics

  1. This week Pastor David began his sermon by doing an overview of the Old Testament books of Kings and Chronicles and how they are written, why they were written, and the difference between them. Do you understand these differences? Does this help you in your Bible reading? Do you have any questions about the differences between Kings and Chronicles or the Northern (10 tribes) of Israel whose capitol was Samaria [bad king 0 for 20] and the Southern (2 tribes) of Judah whose capitol was Jerusalem [8 good & 12 bad]?
  2. 1 Kings 20:35-43 was the key text from this week’s sermon. Take time to review this text. What did you see in this text? What lessons should we learn from this King and his decision? What should we learn from the prophet when he said in verse 40, “While your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared.”?
  3. At the end of the sermon Pastor David made the statement that we choose our misery in life. One example he used was when it comes to health, you either eat what you want and choose not to do physical exercise, which feels good in the moment, but on the back side you will find misery in your weight and most likely a lethargic life. Or, you choose to deny yourself all the junk food and sweets and do some type of physical exercise, which in the moment can be miserable, but long term you will have a healthier body and more energy. Examples could be made for finances, relationships and even habits. What do you think of this statement, “We choose our misery in life”?
