Slowing

In a world that is built on speed, efficiency, and the order today and receive it tomorrow shopping experiences, this week’s practice of slowing may be very challenging for many people. As we come to an end of the series “Freedom From Hurry” we look at what it means to intentionally slow down and look at the benefits of experiencing life right here and now.

Matthew 11:28-30

Discussion topics

This week’s NavGroup questions will be a little different than normal. We will be using a workbook that corresponds with the book that this series is based off of, The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer. You can download a free copy of the PDF workbook from this website.

Please take time to read the portion of the workbook we are covering. Do as many exercises as possible that the book suggests. You may not be able to change all the areas we will cover in four weeks but any changes you make will help in your journey towards an unhurried lifestyle.

  1. Over the past four weeks we have covered four practices to fight against the hurry culture. The practices are:
  • Silence and solitude: it’s to come back to God and our true selves.
  • Sabbath: it’s a restful, grateful life of ease, appreciation, wonder, and worship.
  • Simplicity: it’s freedom and focus on what matters most.
  • Slowing: it’s to be present, to God, to people, and to the moment.

Which of these practices have challenged you the most? Is there a practice that surprised you as a necessary life habit to fight against the hurry culture? Is there a practice that you have begun practicing in your life?

  1. The passage that has been the key scripture for this hurry conversation is Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV). What have you learned about this scripture? Do you read it different now that we are at the end of this series?

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

  1. The main thought for this series has been that a hurry culture is incompatible with a Jesus culture. The Jesus culture is one of love, joy and peace. Have you had any personal revelation on this main thought and if so, what?
