Water Into Wine

Why was Jesus’ first miracle turning water into wine? Why did only the Apostle John write about this miracle? What can we learn from Jesus, his mother Mary, and/or the servants in the story that can apply to our lives today? Join us as we study John 2 and look at the strange turn of events at a wedding in Cana.

John 2:1-10

Discussion topics

  1. In the review portion of Sunday’s sermon, Pastor David said that God will never tempt you but He will test you.  What is the difference between the two?  Do you believe this?
  2. The temptations have the following five steps:
  1. Thought (which will lead to…)
  2. Imagination (after staying here too long you will begin…)
  3. Justification (if you justify it you will decide on your…)
  4. Choice (at this point you are normally pointed in one direction…)
  5. Sin
Have you ever seen this progression of thoughts and actions play out in your life? How do you stop it if you find yourself in the middle of it?

3. In John 2:1-10 we see the first recorded miracle of Jesus in the turning of water into wine. Take time as a group and discuss this story. What did you see for the first time? What did it say to you? What questions did you have or what mindset did this challenge?

4. In John 2:3 we see, “When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”. Jesus then responded in verse 4 by saying, “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”. It would seem to me that Jesus just said “NO” to his mom. But then in verse 5 we see his mother Mary say to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you”. What can we learn from Mary in this situation?
