The Woman at the Well

In John 4, we find out that Jesus “had to go through Samaria” (vs 4).  One thing history tells us is that you didn’t have to go through Samaria. There is a longer route to take in order to avoid this area.  Why did Jesus say he had to go this way?  It was because Jesus always disrupted cultural norms and looked to tear down natural barriers that kept individuals from meeting him.

Discussion topics

  1. When you read this week’s passage about the woman at the well, what stands out to you most? If you had to tell the story in your own words, what part would you highlight?
  2. While reading John 4 we see that there were three distinct arguments that the woman at the well tried to use in order to detour Jesus’ intent to minister and witness to her; the subject of race, the mental games of logic, and the topic of religion. Spend some time discussing these three items. (If you are stuck on this question, here are a few additional thoughts.) a. Have you ever witnessed to someone and these subjects helped versus divided? b. If someone uses these while you are witnessing to them, how can you bring the conversation back on point? If you are willing to argue about these things, does it say something about your motives and mindset?
  3. Titus 3:9 says, “But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless”. Does this verse confirm or contradict the three points found in question #2? Can you share a time that you shared the gospel with someone? Did you use one of these topics or your story?
  4. Is there a place in your life where you continue to go to a natural well trying to get life rather than going to the well of life (Jesus)? Are you willing to share what this place is? It only takes one person in your NavGroup to get this going. This is the time where your group can help you take the next step in your growing relationship with Jesus!
