The Jesus Perspective

This past week did you control your schedule or did your schedule control you? Did you do things you didn’t want to do or things you did want to do? Did you say, “I wish I could but I have no more time”, “I’m doing well, just busy”, or “If only I had a few more hours in my day”?  Here is a little secret, more time is not the answer but rather a change in who is mentoring, influencing and discipling you is. Join us on this 6-week journey as we look at the problem of hurry, the Jesus perspective of hurry and four steps to slow life down.

Matthew 11:28-30

Discussion topics

  1. This was a question from week one, but since it is the main scripture for the series please read, or re-read, Matthew 11:28-30 in both the NIV and MESSAGE version and discuss.  If you did this question the first week, is there anything new you read this week, or is there a personal revelation that you are already seeing from this text?

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV)

Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.

Matthew 11:28-30 (MESSAGE)

  1. This was a question from week one, but since it is the main scripture for the series please read, or re-read, Matthew 11:28-30 in both the NIV and MESSAGE version and discuss.  If you did this question the first week, is there anything new you read this week, or is there a personal revelation that you are already seeing from this text?
  2. Pastor David said that the one big thought for this 6-week conversation was that, “A hurry culture is incompatible with a Jesus culture”.  As we are now into week two of this conversation, what are your thoughts about this statement?  Do you agree or disagree?
  3. Genesis says that we are made from the dust of the ground in God’s image. Pastor David presented a thought that we as humans try to live on the wrong side of our God image and work like we have no limitations, feel the stress of needing to be all-knowing, treating our bodies like we are immortal.  One of the key tasks of our elimination of a hurry culture is to both live in our potential and our limitations.  What does this phrase mean to you and where is it healthy to embrace our limitations?  Why don’t you think people want to hear this?
  4. Read Psalm 46.  Take time to see the picture painted by the psalmist here.  Explore what and how verse 10 plays in this narrative.  How can this Psalm help you change your perspective of your world?  Bottom line: have a good old fashion Bible study on Psalm 46.
