Abraham

In Genesis 11 we see a shift in God’s relationship to mankind. For the first 2,000 years God had a general relationship with all mankind. Then, God worked His purpose through one people, one race, one nation through one man, Abraham. Abraham is not only the genesis of the Judaism faith, but is the father of Islam and Christianity. Join us this week as we look at the calling of Abraham and some of the most pivotal moments in his life.

Joshua 24:1-3, Genesis 12, Hebrews 11:8

Discussion topics

  1. Hebrew 11:8 uses the language of a present participle which means, the response is going on at the same time the call is coming in. You could rewrite this passage to say, “Abraham, while being called, was obeying”. Where in your life do you need to be responding while God is talking?
  2. Genesis 12:10-20 and Genesis 20:1-18 tells of a time where Abraham lied about his wife being his sister in order to protect himself. Is there a place in your life where you have been loyal to a mistake/bad habit? You do it because you think it will protect you but in fact it leads to worse consequences.
  3. In Genesis 11 Abram is called. In Genesis 15 God makes a covenant by paying the price with the sacrifice of animals. In Genesis 17 Abram becomes Abraham when circumcision is presented. Another way to lay this sequence of events out is by saying:

God Calls – This is when we know we need salvation.
God Does – We can’t pay for our sins so Jesus paid the price for us.
Our Response – This is when we circumcise ourselves by the act of water baptism.
