Identity Crisis – Finding Yourself or Losing Yourself
Who gets to define who you are?
Our culture offers countless ways to build an identity around our experiences, accomplishments, struggles, politics, relationships, or even what has happened to us. But for a follower of Jesus, identity isn’t something we create. It’s something we receive.
In this message, Pastor David explores Galatians 2:20 and Jesus’ words in Matthew 5 to discover what happens when Christ becomes the defining center of our lives. Because identity never stays internal. Identity produces action, and action produces influence.
You don’t discover who you are by looking inward. You discover who you are by looking upward.

- Read Galatians 2:20. What do you think Paul means when he says, “I no longer live, but Christ lives in me”? What stood out to you most from Sunday’s message, and why?
- Sunday’s big idea was: “You don’t discover who you are by looking inward. You discover who you are by looking upward.” What does that mean to you?
- How does the progression Identity → Action → Influence help explain why our identity matters so much?
- HEART – How did it make you feel?
- What are you most tempted to allow to define you besides Jesus: success, failure, approval, politics, career, relationships, your past, a struggle, or something else?
- Sunday we said, “Christ doesn’t erase everything that describes me. He determines what ultimately defines me.” Where is that distinction difficult for you personally?
- Paul says Jesus “loved me and gave himself for me.” How would your view of yourself change if being loved by Jesus became more foundational than what you accomplish, what others think, or what has happened to you?
- HANDS – What are you going to do with it?
- Identify one false or secondary identity you have allowed to have too much authority in your life. What would it look like to surrender that to Jesus this week?
- Read Matthew 5:13–16. Jesus calls His followers salt and light. Where has God specifically placed you to have influence right now?
- Who is someone in your life whose identity seems to be rooted in something other than Jesus? Rather than trying to correct their behavior, how could you intentionally show them the love of Jesus this week?
